What is an empowerment?

An empowerment is a traditional Buddhist ceremony during which a qualified master explains the nature of a particular tantric Buddha, his or her history, the empowerment’s function or the way this Buddha helps all living beings. The master also guides visualizations to receive blessings.

Why is this ceremony called an empowerment? During the ceremony, we receive blessings of the body, speech and mind of a Buddha as well as the oral transmission of his or her corresponding mantra. This ceremony, therefore, gives us the power to gain results when we engage in the actual practice of this Buddha, which includes visualizations, and self-generating as his/her form. We also receive the permission to recite the mantra. There is no commitment pertaining to this practice.

What are the benefits of such a ceremony? It is a unique and powerful experience, since all are brought to generate a good motivation to improve themselves to the best of their abilities by increasing their good heart, their connection to a particular buddha, and their wish to help others. This creates a vast amount of collective and individual virtue.

Who can participate in an empowerment? Anyone can attend an empowerment.
